HISTORY will come to life at Rockbourne Roman Villa.
To mark the 80th anniversary of the discovery of Rockbourne Roman Villa, visitors are invited to a living history event on Saturday and Sunday.
From the earliest Iron Age settlement to the opening of the current museum 50 years ago, explore the key chapters of the archaeological site through immersive, family-friendly living history displays and activities.
Visitors will come face-to-face with Saxon warriors and Roman soldiers, learn about the site’s Iron Age past and take a tour of the site with a leading archaeologist.
A display on the history of the excavations of the site can also be seen and there will be lots of craft and making activities for children, including shield decorating and mosaic making.
As a nod to the discovery of the site 50 years ago by the farmer and ferret who discovered parts of the mosaic, visitors will be able to meet ferrets on the day.
There will also be a costume competition and visitors are encouraged to come dressed in their best toga, warrior gear, 1940s vintage or 1970s flares.
There is also a special ‘Evening with the Anglo-Saxons’ from 6pm on Saturday, to give visitors the unique chance to feast (picnic!) with Saxon storytellers, hear Saxon songs and join in with a celebratory drum circle.
