VOLUNTEERS from Chilmark-based disaster response charity Team Rubicon UK are now on the ground in Italy following the devastating earthquake.

The assessment team of three military veterans, who are all qualified medics, have been liasing with the local authorities in the area.

The epicentre of the earthquake was in the village of Accumoli, Rieti, and aftershocks have been continuing since the original quake which hit on Wednesday.

The team will be reporting back to the charity's HQ - assessing the situation and needs of the communities affected.

They have visited two areas considered to be the worst affected and will be looking at travelling out to more remote areas.

Team Rubicon UK volunteers have previously helped with relief efforts during the Nepal earthquake and assisted communities in Canada affected by wildfires earlier this year.
