Catherine Is A Star Of The Future

November 15, 2000 9:41: THEREs no stopping rising young tennis star Catherine Darby, writes Roger Wright.

The 12-year-old from Beckenham has captured the AXA-sponsored British Futures National Champ-ionship with a crushing win in the final at Telford.

Catherine took 45 minutes to beat Rachael Malcolm from Stockton-on- Tees 6-1 6-0 to lift the crown following an equally impressive 6-2 6-1 semi-final win over Swanseas Katie Yoganathan.

Catherine, who is a pupil at Bromley High School and is a member of both the Parklangley and Beckenham clubs, also represents Kent.

She has been playing tennis since she was seven and reached the Telford final after a series of knockout matches which culminated in her winning the regional championship.

There were four regional champions for each of the 45 national singles, doubles and team events for tennis, squash and badminton.

Since March, 284 players of all ages from England, Scotland and Wales competed in the regional qualifiers.

Maxine Longmuir, sponsorship manager for AXA, said: The British Futures provides an essential development link between the grass-roots of tennis, squash and badminton and the leading players in all three games. Only time will tell if they can develop into world-class players.

Apart from her tennis skills, Catherine also plays hockey for Beckenham and netball for the Telstars Club.
