BIRDS of prey are being used as a natural deterrent against pigeons which are causing problems on a Basingstoke housing estate.

The pigeons have been making a mess on flats, balconies and washing in the Oakridge area, and their droppings carry several dangerous bacteria which pose a potential health risk if left to build up.
Sentinel Housing Association asked NBC Bird and Pest Solutions to implement a falconry programme in Freemantle Close, where trained hawks and falcons circle the area to keep pigeons at bay.
Richard Stewart, area manager for NBC, said: “Obviously, another method would be to shoot the birds, but then you’re removing that particular bird but not what attracts them. If you don’t remove the attraction, you don’t remove the problem.”
A 10-day intensive programme using the hawks and falcons has been carried out, and fortnightly maintenance visits will follow to ensure that the pigeons have been scared away by the larger birds and do not return.
