Distinguishing bananas from eighteenth century pianos is easy. However, identifying cars is more challenging - they all look so similar. So, why does my friend's new Porsche resemble a Vauxhall?

Three weeks earlier the battle lines were drawn. He wanted a Porsche. She wanted a 'sensible' car and large conservatory. She won. So, there we were admiring a Vauxhall Zafira. I assured him that life 'still has meaning' and he tearfully offered me a drive.

The Zafira is an MPV with more seats than London Transport. Engines range from 1.6 to 2.2-litres and achieve 29-46mpg. The handling is composed, interiors pleasant, and the ride comfortable. However, the power steering is far too heavy - parking feels like wrestling an angry bull. Personally, I would risk divorce and buy the Porsche.
