My daughter last year decided with the recession hitting hard she thought that an allotment might be a good way of providing for her 6 children. The allotment is rented from the council and costs about £28 per year that is for quite a good sized plot of land. The other people who have allotments are very keen to offer words of advice and encouragement.

When she took it on I was concerned, thinking how are they going to manage that along with the 6 children. In fact it has proved a great family venture which even the youngest enjoys, due to the price of fuel it is not so easy to go for a run out but now they often all go down to the allotment. They are enjoying watching the veg grow, they love picking the strawberries, all betting how high the sun flower will grow and generally all mucking into together. Truthfully it is hard work as well and quite often my daughter heads of down to the allotment after the children have gone to bed or are doing homework, to do the really hard work of staying on top of the weeds.

I would say that the allotment has brought more unity to the family, something they are all involved in, as well as providing the summer veg, fruit and a lot of the winter ones too. Cost wise it is not really going to pay for it’s self this year as they have had to spend money on plants, tools and a shed but in a year or two they will even be able to freeze there veg. The veg will prove to be a lot cheaper than going to the supermarket but also you have the satisfaction of knowing how it was grown, no nasty chemicals making it seem bigger and better. My daughter’s husband also finds it a great stress buster after a day in the office, you are out in the fresh air, doing some exercise and saving money at the same time. My tiny plot there which I hope to plant up this week is going to be just herbs, I use loads in my cooking and they cost a fortune so I am looking forward to being able to pick fresh herbs without the cost.

It is a commitment I think that is well worth considering.
