THE latest figures released by the Office of National Statistics showed that 42 per cent fewer people are claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in south west Wiltshire than in 2010.

The drop of 567 people follows a national trend which has seen unemployment drop by 146,000 people since 2010.

The MP for South West Wiltshire, Andrew Murrison, said: “These impressive new figures are great but what’s more important are the people they represent – my constituents now in work who didn’t have the security of a regular pay packet and were relying on benefits.

“The government’s long-term economic plan, reforming welfare and backing businesses, is a winning strategy benefiting hard working people and their families as these figures clearly show.

“The aim locally is to up-skill the workforce and I know that agencies like Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire College are actively engaged in this.”
