SALISBURY and District Chamber of Commerce & Industry has joined the Wessex Association of Chambers of Commerce.

Salisbury chamber president, Ian Hudson, made the announcement at a business breakfast event for members and guests held at the Rose and Crown Hotel in Harnham last Thursday.

Mr Hudson said the decision was made to affiliate with the Wessex Association in light of the changing status of local government in Wiltshire. He said with a new unitary authority coming into being next April, it was "important to have one voice for Wiltshire".

"Our joining the Wessex Association of Chambers of Commerce makes them stronger," he said, "and as one stronger body we can have a coherent debate with the new unitary authority.

"This is a great leap forward from a lobbying perspective."

He said one of the Salisbury and District chamber board members would sit on the Wessex Association board, and members would be able to take advantage of the "fantastic benefits" the Wessex Association could give them.

Wessex Association members could tap into the benefits offered by Salisbury and District chamber, he added.

The Salisbury and District chamber will continue to operate independently.
