BUSINESSES in Salisbury and the surrounding area are being asked to "putt" themselves forward for a charity golf day next month.

The Lions Club of Salisbury is hosting the event at High Post Golf Club, between Salisbury and Amesbury, on August 15.

It wants businesses to enter teams, sponsor a hole, provide prizes or items for goodie bags. Main sponsors are High Post Golf Club and German vehicle specialist, PKF Engineering, of Farm Lane Business Centre in Churchfields Road, Salisbury.

PKF, founded six years ago, is run by husband and wife, Paul and Paula Foote, and Paula's brother-in-law, Gerry.

Mrs Foote said some of those already involved in the golf day were the company's clients, and many came from far and wide to take part. "We don't play golf ourselves," she said, "but, last year, we gave a prize and are offering prizes again this year.

"It's all about helping the local community and we want businesses to sponsor holes or provide things such as keyrings to go in the goodie bags which will be given to each player."

She said R & E Land Rover, White Horse Auto Styling of Salisbury, and ADS Services of Devizes have already become involved.

Barrie Richardson, immediate past president of the Lions Club, said the golf day was one of the club's major fundraising events.

"I was involved in starting it in 1980," he said. "It started as a social event among club members and expanded to become a charity event. People came back each year, as it was a special event to them, but many have got older and others have moved out of the Salisbury area, so we need to attract new people."

He explained the 26 teams of four will have breakfast on arrival, play a round of golf, have lunch and play another round, before enjoying dinner and the presentations in the evening.

"We expect to raise £3,000 to £4,000 from the golf day," said Mr Richardson.

"More than 90 per cent of the money we raise goes into local charitable support, and the rest to national and international charities."
