IT equipment disposal company RecommIT of Salisbury has been sold to Australian corporation Sims Group's Recycling Solutions division.

RecommIT, which has its base at the Dolphin Centre, off Southampton Road, was founded in 1997 and has established itself as a leading IT equipment disposal agency, undertaking the collection, secure data purging, recycling and redistribution of redundant IT equipment.

It has 37 staff in Salisbury, all of whom are continuing with the Sims Group.

Directors Geoff and Jane Corani, who live near Wilton, are retiring, but will be retained as consultants.

Mrs Corani said RecommIT had worked with Sims for several years prior to its acquiring the company.

"We are very comfortable with their ethos and believe that we are leaving the company in safe hands," she said.

"Sims is intending to continue and grow the operation in Salisbury."

Sims Group's core business is metal recycling and it has 3,500 employees.

Graham Davy, global chief executive officer for Sims Recycling Solutions, said: "We are extremely pleased to welcome RecommIT into our business. Their infrastructure in the UK offers Sims an excellent platform for further growth in an important market.

"Growing awareness of the intrinsic value present in returned business electronic assets, as well as an increasing focus on social responsibility makes this a key sector for anyone serious about providing a complete solution to waste electrical and electronic equipment."

  • Sims Group's annual turnover is A$5.5bn and is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.
