Alex needing sponsors for arts event

AN ARTIST who has organised a successful community project is looking for business sponsors to ensure this year's event goes ahead.

Alex Grant, of Toozalii Community Arts of Salisbury, has staged the Lantern Parade for two years, coinciding with one of the late night shopping evenings before Christmas.

The project brings young people together from across the district, many of whom have learning or physical disabilities, to form workshops.

In these workshops they make the lanterns, which are paraded on the night from the Arts Centre, through the streets of Salisbury to the Cathedral.

The first two events have featured more than 800 lanterns.

Mr Grant, a past winner of a Salisbury Journal People Award, told the Journal that Arts Council South West had declined to support the project for a third year running and said it was important that such "grass roots level community events" continued.

He is keen to hear from businesses that would be interested in sponsoring this year's parade.

Mr Grant was awarded an Arts Council England Fellowship award for 2006 in recognition of the work he and his wife, Jan, have done with rural and minority groups.
