Woman robbed of purse

POLICE have issued safety advice after an elderly woman was robbed of her purse while out shopping in Salisbury yesterday.

Quick-thinking staff at the Tesco store in Castle Street witnessed a purse-snatch shortly after 11am, and radioed for help.

Plain clothes officers targeting purse thieves were already in the area and were quickly able to direct uniformed officers to apprehend and detain a suspect.

A 30-year-old local man was arrested and subsequently charged with theft. He was remanded in custody to appear at North Wiltshire Magistrates Court today.

Police have issued the following advice to shoppers:

  • Keep your handbag, wallet or phone secure on your person
  • Position your handbag to the front of your body and zipped up
  • Do not keep your wallet in your back pocket
  • Leave anything valuable or sentimental, and cards you do not need at home
If you are a victim of crime whilst shopping or notice anything suspicious, contact the store manager, store security or Wiltshire Police on 0845 408 7000 as soon as possible.

Can't CID make arrests then?
