THIS is the man who will lead Southampton’s newest school when it opens its doors for the first time later this year.
Christian Down has been named as the principal of Southampton Studio School, which will offer teenagers the chance to combine studying for traditional qualifications with gaining valuable work experience.
The school, which will be the first of its kind in the south of England, is due to open on the site of City College Southampton in September, and will be open to 14 to 19-year-olds.
Christian, who has 15 years’ experience in secondary school education, said he is “relishing” the “wonderful opportunity” to lead the school.
He said: “Southampton Studio School will be very different to traditional secondary school.
“Classes will be small, allowing personalised tutoring for every student and giving us the ability to target their individual needs.
“My aspirations are high and we will ensure every child leaves our school with the best examination results, enabling them to walk into the best jobs in the area.
“My vision is to prepare students for their careers by raising aspirations through an innovative curriculum, creating a seamless link between employers and education and utilising the best teaching expertise and modern technology.”
The chairman of the school’s board, Malcolm Le Bas, said: “We interviewed a number of high calibre candidates but the focus on employer-led learning and utilising modern technology are key to the success of the Southampton Studio School.
“Christian has a proven track record in delivering in this area while his background in business and ICT will be invaluable,” he added.
