Strong foundation for your studies
5:37pm Thursday 5th September 2013 in Education
SOUTHAMPTON Solent University still has limited places available on degree courses.
Subjects including business, creative industries, IT, technology and sport, as well as foundation courses all still have space to take new students.
The foundation courses are proving popular as an option for students who may not have achieved the required A level or BTEC grades for a degree course.
They are also a good option for those students who are still undecided about the path they wish to take in higher education as there is no long term commitment according to Solent University’s Head of Student Recruitment, Dr Stephen Lake.
“Foundation years give a good insight into university education and life without having to make an immediate commitment to a three-year degree course,” said Dr Lake.
One student who has benefitted from completing a foundation course is Jessica Thiele, 19. She is about to start a sport and tourism management degree course, having just completed her foundation year.
She says: ‘I undertook the foundation year as I was sure that Solent was the university for me, but I did not get the correct A-level results to get on the degree course I wanted. I went through clearing and was offered the foundation course.
“Doing the foundation year gave me a better understanding of the course and the university.
“I gained a lot of confidence in the academic work and a clearer understanding of how the university expects you to work.”
Jessica begins her degree course this month. She plans to go into the travel and tourism industry.
Undecided students can still speak to fully trained staff about course availability, as well as general information about higher education (HE) opportunities.
The clearing advice line is open Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm. Students can contact our trained staff on 023 8001 1722, email email@example.com, post a query on facebook.com/ AskSolent or tweet for advice and support @asksolent.
