Discounted bus travel scheme for students in Southampton
6:00am Thursday 13th September 2012 in Education
The discounted bus travel scheme for Southampton students has been relaunched
Southampton students are being offered discounted bus travel to college or sixth form as part of a scheme to help them get to class and ease the burden of staying in education .
The city council created the discounted bus travel card for 16 to 19-year-olds with Bluestar and First Bus , in response to the Government withdrawing the Education Maintenance Allowance for students.
The card gives students the chance of unlimited bus travel around Southampton between 6am and midnight during term-time and halfterm breaks for just £6 a week – almost a third cheaper than standard fares.
Re-launching the scheme, Southampton’s education boss Cllr Sarah Bogle, pictured, said: “It’s crucial that we as a council do all we can to remove any barriers that could prevent young people staying in education.”
