DRIVING children to achieve impossibly high results can be counter-productive and lead to major problems with self-esteem, says Salisbury Cathedral headmaster Clive Marriott.

“If a child feels they can never live up to expectations, this can lead to a total lack of motivation and constant anxiety.

“At Salisbury Cathedral School, our belief is children are more likely to succeed if they feel a sense of self-worth. We feel it is important to celebrate individual achievements and reward children’s progress at all levels with genuine recognition and praise “Our children are not forced into becoming something they are not. We work with them to the best of their ability and aim towards rounded individuals with the self-confidence and resilience to take their place in an increasingly difficult world.

“Our results speak for themselves: in recent years, we have out-performed competing schools in the number of scholarships awarded to senior schools and our pupils also do well in 11+ exams, giving them entry to the local grammars. “To strengthen our emphasis on the individual, we are introducing an innovative new programme called ‘motivational mapping’.

“This reveals potential in children by pinpointing their current academic and holistic needs and tailoring learning to them individually. By discussing the results with our pupils and their parents, we will encourage greater self-realisation and knowledge, leading to a stronger sense of purpose and self-confidence.

“I would urge any parent considering a choice of schools to put their child’s happiness first. Choose a school with a warm, loving atmosphere that will genuinely nurture and encourage children by investing time in understanding what motivates them as individuals. Your child is likely to do much better in the long term and, most importantly, will develop self-confidence, maturity and a genuine love of learning.”

Set in 27 acres of beautiful grounds in the historic Cathedral Close, Salisbury Cathedral School is a co-educational day and boarding school educating children from three to 13 years. The next open morning is on Saturday, October 11, starting at 10am. The school is also known for excellence in music – with 14 ensembles rehearsing every week and 90 per cent of pupils in the prep school playing an instrument, it is not difficult to see why.

Music can be heard in every corridor as you walk around the school and our many concerts throughout the year are uplifting, inspiring and full of joy. However, there is so much more to SCS.

Mr Marriott said: “With more than 27 acres of beautiful grounds, in the shadow of the cathedral’s spire, we have the facilities for our boys and girls to enjoy a wide range of sports ranging from rugby and netball to archery and golf. All our children get the chance to play in matches and sporting results are impressive.

“We believe in nurture, not pressure. Founded on Christian values, the school is immensely caring and warm, fostering an environment where children are encouraged and congratulated every step of the way.

“This approach builds self-esteem, which we feel is vital to a child’s success.

“Our academic results speak for themselves.

“Every year, we outperform competing schools in the number of scholarships awarded to senior schools.

“We also have an impressive record of entry to the grammar schools at 11+ and 13+.

“Add to this our track record of performing ambitious drama productions, winning regional science competitions, writing inspiring poetry, creating beautiful metalwork, pottery and art and we feel we have something to bring out every child’s talents.”

Prospective parents are invited to the school’s next open morning on Saturday, October 11 starting at 10am.
