Domestic Pet Q&A
Pet is now seven years old
It is a common misconception that elderly
animals do not require vaccinations. Animals are at risk their whole life, and especially when either very young or elderly. Dogs should be vaccinated against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza and leptospirosis. Cats should be vaccinated against flu, enteritis and feline leukaemia. These are all life-threatening infections that are difficult to treat.
Vaccinations for rabies, kennel cough in dogs and chlamydophila in cats are also advisable in some circumstances. Vaccinations are needed every year, and will include a thorough health check by a vet, which is increasingly important as your pet ages. Rabbits should also be vaccinated and we recommend cover for myxomatosis every six months and viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD) annually.
