Farm Animal Q&A
Cow gives birth to twins
Yes, your calf may be what's called a
'freemartin'. Genetically freemartins are
female, but they are effectively sterilised by
hormones from the male twin in the uterus.
The degree of masculinization can vary and
most freemartins do not show signs of this until
they are a little older. Most tend to have an
underdeveloped uterus, which your vet can feel
when the heifer is of breeding age.
Unfortunately, over 90% of female calves born
with a male twin are infertile, so it is quite likely
you will be unable to breed from yours.
