'Dishwasher salmon' is a trend that has been doing the rounds on 'American TikTok' as a novel way of cooking salmon.

As you have probably guessed, it involves placing a salmon fillet in some tinfoil, or a plastic bag, and letting it sit in your dishwasher during a rinse.

The result is what can only be considered a complete waste of fish and a potential - yet thoroughly deserved - bout of food poisoning.

I'll try anything food-wise, I really will, but I've never had an experience like 'dishwasher salmon' before, I'll give it that.

It was first demonstrated by Vincent Price in 1975 during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, who presented it as "a dish any fool can prepare".

To this day, the reasons why Price wanted to poison the American population remain unclear.

It has since reappeared on TikTok over the past year or so, where people, mostly in America, have been declaring it a foolproof way of cooking a salmon fillet.

So, I decided to give it a try.

There's no recipe here. I bought a salmon fillet, wrapped it in clingfilm, and put it in the dishwasher - a sentence I never thought I'd say.

The result was disgusting, vile, awful, hideous, and has actually forced me to swear off fish altogether, I felt that bad, physically and morally.

"Dishwasher companies and Consumer Reports have recommended against cooking fish with a dishwasher because dishwashers are not designed or tested for cooking," Wikipedia states.

"Dishwashers do not have temperatures as consistent as stoves, and it's uncertain whether dishwashers will heat fish sufficiently to kill pathogens. Food poisoning may be the result."

Encouraging to read, post 'meal'.

Now let me cast your mind back to 2003, Finding Nemo. Remember at the start when Marlin's wife and 99 children are all viciously killed? I can guarantee you that this fish went through worse.

As it slowly boiled on a setting 4 economy wash between 5 tea mugs and a pizza cutter, I wondered, is there much worse you could do to a fish?

Food wastage on TikTok for getting 'views' is getting out of hand. People really will go to extreme lengths to ‘gross you out’, simply to keep you engaged and watching.

The stuff you see can really boil (sorry salmon) your blood, it truly can. 'Dishwasher salmon' is just one shining example of the downside of TikTok, of which there are many.

From now on, I shall be heeding the three Finding Nemo sharks’ manifesto: Fish are friends, not food.
