RED Ken's job at the top could be under threat from Bromley Council leader Michael Tickner.

The Tory councillor told the News Shopper that peer pressure may force him to contest Ken Livingstone's position at the next election.

Cllr Tickner claims he has been told by Conservative col-leagues outside Bromley that he would be worthy successor to left-leaning Mayor Livingstone.

He told us: "It's about time outer London taught inner London socialists how to run a local authority"

No stranger to being tipped for the top, Cllr Tickner's name was mentioned in connection with the vacant Beckenham MP's job after the downfall of scandalised Piers Merchant.

Cllr Tickner is currently consulting within the Bromley party, after admitting he is "seriously considering" going for the job, and becoming the Conservative Party's official candidate.

Mayor Livingstone already faces stiff competition to keep of-fice, after his current deputy Nicky Gavron's announcement that she will stand at the 2004 election.
