ROCK star Sting is one of the high-profile performers at a special concert of readings and music retelling the story of romantic composer Robert Schumann and his composer-wife Clara.

The singer, who found fame in the 1970s as lead singer and bass player of The Police, with a string of hits such as Roxanne and Every Breath You Take, has recently made a big impact in the charts.

His album of 16th-century lute music, Songs from the Labyrinth, has reached number one in the classical charts and is also doing well in the pop charts.

Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler, who will also be taking part, have a home at Lake House, in Wilsford-cum-Lake. Baritone Simon Keenlyside will also be involved in the event.

The concert has been organised by the Countess of Chichester, in aid of Salisbury Cathedral choral foundation, and takes place in the Trinity chapel on Saturday, November 18, at 7pm.

Tickets for the Trinity Chapel cost £200 (to include a reception in the Chapter House beforehand), or £100 without the reception.

These are available by application only through Lady Chichester's secretary, Jayne Rowe, on 01722 782210.

There will also be a limited number of seats in the choir (unsighted and unreserved), available subject to a donation to the choral foundation - the suggested range is between £10 and £25.

The choir tickets are available from the Department of Liturgy and Music, 33 The Close, Salisbury, with cheques payable to Salisbury Cathedral choral foundation.
