THE music of Bishopstone composer Michael Stimpson formed the centrepiece of a concert in Barga, Italy.
The concert, held last month, commemorated the centenary of poet Giovanni Pascoli, who lived near the Tuscan town.
It featured Stimpson’s setting of eight Pascoli poems for piano and tenor, Dall’Alba al Tramonto (presented in Salisbury in 2006), and some rarely heard guitar works, Five Miniatures and Café Music.
The concert also saw the world premiere of L’Ora di Barga, a setting of Pascoli’s poem for soprano and piano, dedicated to ‘il Commune di Barga’.
And Stimpson was presented with the medal of the Commune and the Fondazione G. Pascoli.
L’Ora di Barga is the first work Stimpson has written since the completion of his opera, Jesse Owens, last year.
Rearranged extracts from Jesse Owens will be presented at an evening of poetry, talks, and music celebrating the centenary of the athlete’s birth as part of the Ashley Wood Festival, Tisbury, in 2013.
