SALISBURY SINFONIA, ST THOMAS'S CHURCH, SALISBURY
AS we have come to expect, the concert by Salisbury Sinfonia on Saturday was full of interest and charm.
Bryony Moody, pictured, played Kabalevsky's cello concerto with total commitment and great poise.
Her sensitive, passionate playing entranced the audience, especially in the elegiac second movement.
Technically very difficult passages were easily accomplished, and her full singing tone was beautiful and unforced. We hope to hear more of Bryony in the future.
Although both the Kabalevsky concerto and the Myaskovsky Serenade were based on Russian themes, and written 20 years apart, the Myaskovsky sounded old-fashioned, using unison melodies over soft accompaniment.
There were lovely woodwind solos from Cheri Richens, Phil Rawnson and Ian Murray.
Mendelssohn’s Scottish symphony was bright, light, quick and full of wonderful melodies, with hints of Elijah and Midsummer Night’s Dream.
It was beautifully played, with such immediate response to Tim Murray’s every gesture. It sent us home smiling.
