THE Three Musketeers is a classic tale that everyone knows, but I can guarantee you’ve never seen it done like this before.
A cappella comedy group Barbershopera are three guys and a girl – the line-up has changed over the years and this time it’s Laura Darton, Pete Sorel-Cameron, Harry Stone and Russell Walker – who tell the classic tale armed with a handful of props and their singing voices.
Barbershopera have been delighting audiences with their musical comedy since 2007 and had a YouTube hit with their song I Could Have Married Kate. If you haven’t heard of them you should definitely try to catch a performance.
This show is delightfully silly, and it had everyone in the audience chuckling away as we were treated to a bearded femme fatale, an incredibly flamboyant Duke of Buckingham and a brilliant effort to have both King Louis and Aramis on the stage at the same time, despite the fact they were played by the same actor.
Throw in the King’s golden plums, a jam roly-poly and some great catchy songs and you’ll have some idea of the fun you can have at a night with Barbershopera.
* Barbershopera is at the Playhouse until Thursday, September 12. For tickets call 01722 320333.
