Review: Poetry Joe

POETRY JOE, Salisbury Playhouse
POETRY Joe, star of children’s channel CBeebies’ Rhyme Rocket, brought his own show to Salisbury Playhouse this week.
With a large audience of schoolchildren already fluent in reading and phonics, mixed with pre-schoolers who are still at the scribbling stage, it was a tough crowd, but performer Joseph Coelho – or Poetry Joe as he is better known – handled the range of ages and abilities well.
Blending physical theatre, comedy and projections, Poetry Joe introduced his audience to different forms of verse and rhyme.
The children were invited to help devise some of the rhymes, and this show worked best when they could see their ideas transformed into poems on the large screen.
There were some clever ideas and for schoolchildren it could act as a good starting point for projects on poetry.
Younger audience members preferred Joe’s “funny arm dances” and doodling on the “special paper” that made their “spiders and monsters” appear on the screen.
