A Number at the Nuffield

Salisbury Journal: John Shrapnel John Shrapnel

A FATHER and son will be taking to the stage at Southampton’s Nuffield Theatre in a new production of Caryl Churchill’s A Number.

John and Lex Shrapnel will appear in the work, directed by Michael Longhurst and with set design by Tom Scutt and lighting by Lee Curran, in their first collaboration since the award-winning and Olivier-nominated Constellations (Royal Court and West End).

Bernard thinks he’s an only child.

But at the age of 35, he learns otherwise.

Discovering the results of a scientific experiment that left him as one of “a number” of clones, Bernard confronts his father, Salter.

As clones reveal themselves, identities are challenged, but how will Salter reveal the true events of the past?

And more importantly, which Bernard is the original?

A Number is an urgent play asking human questions of a complex scientific debate, not least the moral and human dilemmas when experimentation gets out of control.

A Number is at the Nuffield from February 6 to 11.

Tickets on 02380 671771 or at nuffieldtheatre.co.uk.
