COMEDIAN Tom Wrigglesworth says his new show will make you laugh, but could leave you crying and wanting to call your grandparents.

Utterly at Odds with the Universe takes Wrigglesworth on an emotional journey from childhood to adulthood, exploring the poignant and profound relationship with his grandfather.

“When my parents moved, my grandmother I helped them and I found a box of cassette tapes, and one of them was full of interviews with my granddad, when I was six or seven,” he said.

“And Utterly at Odds with the Universe is based on the interviews. There are funny stories about what has happened to me, what happens as my granddad gets older and the ways he influenced what I do now. A lot of people come out crying.” Wrigglesworth said he takes after his grandfather in that he was a DIY master.

“That generation of people could fix everything,” he said. “I’m very much like that now. I refuse to buy anything until I’ve give it more than a good going over. I now find myself in demand; I’ve put up half my neighbours’ shelves and I’ve ended up a bit like a janitor.”

Wrigglesworth said audience members can expect flourishes of language, twisted logic and whimsical storytelling.

Following the success of his Edinburgh Comedy Award-nominated show, Open Return Letter to Richard Branson, Wrigglesworth has enjoyed two successful Radio 4 series, in 2011 and 2012, and scooped a Sony Radio Academy Award in recognition of excellence.

Last year, he wrote and performed another new series for Radio 4, Tom Wrigglesworth’s Hang-ups, which has been commissioned for a second series, along with a one-off special of Utterly at Odds with the Universe.

He said his latest stand-up show, which he is touring with in New Zealand after his UK run, is the one he is most proud of.

Utterly at Odds with the Universe is coming to Salisbury Arts Centre on February 5. For tickets, call 01722 321744.
