A SHARP and modern version of Frank Wedekind’s definitive play is coming to Southampton’s Nuffield Theatre next week.

Spring Awakening, Wedekind’s unnerving, funny and dark work about youth exploded onto the stage in 1906 with its provocative content of adolescent sexuality, suicide, abortion and rape.

The new version by Anya Reiss has brought the story up to date, keeping the restless urgency and erotic energy of the original while questioning how young people are shaped for their future by a generation that doesn’t understand them.

The Nuffield is reunited with Headlong theatre company for this production, and is also working with West Yorkshire Playhouse.

The show runs from Tuesday until April 5 and is suitable for audiences aged 16 and over.
