AN exploration of choral settings of Psalms across the ages will be the theme for a concert by the Farrant Singers at the weekend.
The group will be exploring I was glad (Psalm 122), which appears in three differing styles: Tomas Luis de Victoria’s Laetatus sum, Henry Purcell’s setting in English of 1685 and Hubert Parry’s from 1902.
Psalm 51 (Miserere) by Gregorio Allegri, will juxtapose simple plainsong, choral polyphony and ornamented solo voices.
And the programme will also feature Two Slavonic Psalms by Arvo Pärt, motets by William Byrd, Schubert’s setting of Psalm 23 (The Lord is my shepherd) for ladies’ voices, and Vaughan Williams’ Lord, Thou hast been our refuge.
The concert is at St Martin’s Church, Salisbury on Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 in advance or £13 at the door (£5 for students and under 16s).
