REHEARSALS are under way for a new production at Salisbury Playhouse in the first collaboration between the theatre’s Stage ’65 youth group and Musical Theatre Salisbury.

They will be bringing Oh What a Lovely War to the main stage in August.

This stirring and satirical musical entertainment was an immediate hit for Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop when it opened in 1963.

Through sketches and songs such as Pack Up Your Troubles, Keep the Home Fires Burning and It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, the optimism of the Home Front and the horrors of the fields of Flanders are brought to life.

Taking to the stage will be 60 members of Stage ’65 Youth Theatre and Musical Theatre Salisbury.

Members of both organisations will also provide support in backstage roles, assisting with costume, props, lighting and sound.

The opening performance will take place on the 100th anniversary of Britain’s entry into the First World War and is part of a programme of events taking place both locally and nationally to mark this occasion.

Director Mark Powell said: “We are delighted to be collaborating with Musical Theatre Salisbury for this project.

It is hugely exciting to be working with so many talented people of all ages and to be marking the centenary with such an iconic piece of theatre.

“We’re going to create a community spectacle not seen for years on the Playhouse’s stage.”
