ART from the Archives opens on Saturday at the Young Gallery, Salisbury - a project started with an initial brief to produce work using just a 2B pencil and paper no bigger than A5, inspired by archives selected by staff at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre.

Staff chose the 16 objects from the eight miles of shelves at the centre. The artists’ engaged with the objects, inspiring a series of pencil drawings It is a collaborative project which seeks to explore the connections between archival processes and the interpretation of historic documents by artists.

The submissions have been brought together as ‘The Semantic Archive’ artists’ book. This is to be launched at the exhibition, and it can also be viewed digitally via issuu.com/juliesmithissuu.com/ docs/semantic_archive_digital_book.
