BRAM Stoker’s chilling gothic tale Dracula is coming to the main stage at Salisbury Playhouse on November 14 and 15.

Following a sell-out run in London’s Victorian Wilton’s Music Hall last year, Dracula is now touring the country, produced by the Mark Bruce Company.

A company of ten dancers perform this heart-wrenching story in a highly-charged production.

With an eclectic mix of music from Bach and Mozart to contemporary classical composers György Ligeti (fittingly, born in Transylvania) and Fred Frith, Bruce explores choreographic styles ranging from classical to contemporary dance.

One of the UK’s most highly-regarded dancers, Jonathan Goddard, plays the vampire count.

“It’s a dance production with no speaking at all, which is quite unusual, but I think works very well,” said Jonathan, who is performing at the Playhouse for the first time.

He said audiences could expect a “completely new take on a well-known film”, adding that Mark Bruce’s take on the classic was “very much his own.”

“It’s quite dark, not recommended for children,” said Jonathan.

Jonathan was the first contemporary dancer to win the Critics Circle national dance award for best male dancer.

“In modern dance it’s pretty hard so it was fairly satisfying to do. It was very nice and unexpected,” said Jonathan.

Producer Mark Bruce said: “The idea of a dancing Dracula is tricky, but when I worked with Jonathan I found all kinds of possibilities for choreographic vocabulary.

“He brings many sides to the role: the hunter, the wolf, the noble and sinister count, the lonely undead, a malevolent humour, a vicious callous streak and a childlike naivety.”
