SALISBURY Musical Society is set to join forces with London-based orchestra Chelsea Opera Group to perform a Schubert and Brahms programme.
The Mass No 5 in A flat Major is the grandest and most ambitious of six settings of the Mass composed by Schubert.
Like many of his works, the Mass in A flat was not performed in his lifetime, an omission all the more heart-rending for the fact that Schubert is known to have regarded it highly and to have devoted a considerable amount of time to refining and revising the score. Brahms very beautiful Song of Destiny will also be performed, along with Brahms Alto Rhapsody, which uses only the male voices of the choir, and a soprano soloist. This work was written as a wedding gift for the Schumann’s daughter, Julie.
The performance takes place at 7.30pm on Saturday, in Salisbury Cathedral. Tickets from salisburymusicalsociety.org.uk
