THE Young Gallery in Salisbury has acquired an important work by John Piper, Maen Bras (Big Stone and Rain), with support from the Art Fund and a grant of £56,200 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
The work will provide inspiration for a new project with Soldiers of the 1st Battalion Royal Welsh and Young Carers based in South Wiltshire. Sir Christopher Benson unveiled the new work in front of a gathering of gallery supporters and curator Peter Riley was on hand to provide a personal interpretation of the work and its importance to the collection.
He said: “John Piper’s life overlays a historic century of change, both nationally and artistically.
“The Snowdonia series of drawings, of which this is one, represents some of the best landscape work of the 20th century.”
