THE Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival is looking for 400 singers to perform at its opening night on Friday, May 22.

Market Songs, a large-scale music-theatre commission, will take over the Market Place and surrounding streets for the evening.

Composer Michael Betteridge is writing a collection of market songs, rounds, choruses and cries that will explore the city’s medieval trades.

The 400 singers, working with Betteridge and music director Howard Moody, will perform in streets that still hold their trade names today – Butcher Row, Fish Row and Silver Street – before coming together for a finale in the Market Place.

The event builds on the success of 2014’s Voices from No Man’s Land, which looked at the Christmas truce of 1914. Market songs will celebrate Salisbury’s early history and traditions, using song to bring centuries of stories to life. Male and female singers aged 18 and over are encouraged to come to an introductory workshop at Sarum Academy, Westwood Road on Saturday January 10, 10am-1pm.
