AGEAS Salisbury International Arts Festival has revealed some of its highlight events for 2015.

Events include a production of King John to coincide with the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta.

In 2015 the festival will look eastwards, taking inspiration from the sunrise and celebrating the arts and culture of the Middle East. Details of the full programme will be revealed at the main Festival launch on Monday, March 2, 2015.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, in co-production with Royal & Derngate Northampton, will perform King John in the medieval majesty of Salisbury Cathedral, just a few feet away from the best surviving copy of King’s John’s Magna Carta and alongside the tomb of his half-brother William Longspée.

Also in the cathedral, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, pictured below in the Cathedral, will play Rimsky-Korsakov’s musical depiction of the Arabian Nights, Scheherazade.

Israel in Egypt, one of Handel’s finest English language oratorios, will be performed by one of the UK’s leading Baroque ensembles, La Nuova Musica, in a score packed with musical drama.

There will be world music at its finest with Trio Joubran, three Palestinian brothers weaving magical sounds on the Arabic lute or oud.

Elvis Costello, pictured above, will draw upon 35 years of back catalogue in a much-lauded solo show.

And Australia’s leading circus company Circa will push the boundaries of acrobatics in a daring show entitled simply ‘S’.

Festival director Toby Smith said: “Choosing just six highlight events has been challenging, and there will be many more exciting things in the pipeline that we will reveal.

“We have very busy weeks ahead of us, as we draw together our final mixture of music, theatre, circus, dance, literature, talks, films, a stronger-than-ever family programme and our free opening weekend events, including Salisbury Live.

“The festival would not be what it is without considerable support from sponsors, donors, friends, volunteers and all those working at Salisbury’s venues of all kinds, all of whom we thank wholeheartedly.”
