A RARELY-performed opera of Andrea Chenier will be broadcast live from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden to the Odeon cinema in Salisbury on January 29 at 7.15pm.

This demanding opera was last performed at the opera house 30 years ago, with Salisbury’s Rosalind Plowright singing the soprano role of Madeleine de Coigny and Jose Carreras in the title role.

This time Rosalind will perform the role of Madeleine’s mother, the Countess de Coigny, while German superstar Jonas Kaufmann will play Andrea Chenier, the poet of the French Revolution.

Rosalind said: “This is a simply wonderful opera and one I have been associated with for 30 years.

“It is like a Puccini opera, full of great tunes and true-to-life drama. “The story takes place as the Revolution devours France, turning nobility into hunted animals and their former servants into their masters.

“Umberto Giordano, the composer, leaves no stone unturned as he moves the story through love, revolution, duplicity, spying, a courtroom lynching, self-sacrifice and the Guillotine.”

Andrea Chenier is the most sold out production of the 2014/15 season.
