LEADEN Hall School opened their Magna Carta Poetry Competition this week with a launch party.

Headteacher Julia Eager welcomed children and teachers from 14 local schools to the event. Guest speaker Janice Brennan, a Middle Temple judge dressed in her robes and wig, explained the history of the Magna Carta and the children were delighted to be able to try on her wig and gown afterwards.

John Cox, member of the Salisbury International Arts Festival and ex-head of English and assistant headteacher at Bishop Wordsworth’s School, gave the children tips about what makes a good poem.

There are three categories: Infants, Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6, and the children whose poems are shortlisted will be invited to perform them at a ceremony at Leaden Hall in June, when the prizes will be awarded.

The judging panel consists of John Cox, Kristina Stephenson, a local author who writes the Charlie Stinky Socks books, Bill Browne, the editor of Salisbury Journal, Ceri Hurford-Jones, the managing director of Spire FM, and John Glen MP.

Leaden Hall marketing manager Emma Masterman said: “We would be delighted to welcome any late entries into the competition, please email admin@leaden-hall.com to register your school’s interest.”
