SALISBURY papercut artist Vanessa Stone is coming back home as part of a special exhibition at Salisbury Museum that will run until July 4.

Her unique pictures are created by layering cut outs and colours in a highly imaginative way to create the finished product.

Vanessa said: “It’s something I started doing eight years ago after starting out with textiles.”

She grew up in Winterslow but moved out of the area in her 20s but said it was always an ambition to return to the city for a special exhibition.

“I just have this connection with Salisbury and the area that surrounds it,” she said.

“It’s where my father lived all his life, so it is a place I have often returned to.

“I would say I am a real country girl. I rode horses, climbed trees and went on bike rides round the villages.

“I went to school in the town, to La Retraite Convent School and then went on to Salisbury College of Art for my Foundation Course.”

Inspired to go into papercut artistry by Rob Ryan and Beatrice Coron she spent her early years experimenting with stencils which was when the “penny dropped”.

“Many people comment on my patience,” she added. “Pieces do take a long time but because you get the results of what you cut away so quickly, it’s a very addictive process – each piece you cut away leads you to another to cut away.”

Anyone wishing to learn about the intricacies of being a papercut artist can attend one of Vanessa’s workshops. Information can be found at salisbury museum.org.uk.
