THE talents of the city’s young people were showcased and celebrated at the Salisbury Young People’s Festival of Music, Dance and Drama.

The music festival was held at Sarum College last weekend while the dance and drama festival took place on Saturday at Studio Theatre.

Festival chairman Sharon Chaldecott said: “The whole festival was an inspiring experience. It was a joy to be a part of this unique festival and to see the pleasure it brought the children to be applauded and rewarded for their efforts.

“I wholeheartedly believe that all the entrants gained something positive from taking part and I will continue to work to keep this festival alive and hopefully, thriving.”

Over the two days of the music festival there were performances from children of all ages and abilities, ranging from classical through to stage and show, jazz and popular music.

Singers from Downton Primary School, Avondale Preparatory School and Leehurst Swan took part. Downton Primary School’s ensemble were the winners, singing emotional renditions of The Rose and Who Will Buy from Oliver!

One of the festival’s stalwart supporters, Sandroyd School in Tollard Royal, brought more than 30 children to compete, who attracted positive comments and well-earned trophies.

Sharon added: “There was a wonderful positive atmosphere throughout the music festival, with all the entrants benefiting from the experience of performing in such a place as Sarum College and receiving very valuable advice from the professional musicians who acted as the adjudicators.”

During the dance and drama side of the festival the young people performed a variety of drama and dance pieces throughout the day, including acted scenes, poetry, Shakespeare monologues and contemporary dance.

Helen Stokes in conjunction with the pupils of St Francis School, Pewsey, showed their enthusiasm for the event – turning up in good numbers and were rewarded for their efforts.

Studio Youth Theatre’s members also performed scenes from their most recent show The Biscuit Tin.
