YOUNG people are being given the chance to learn more about theatre, watch live performances and hang-out in a creative environment as part of the National Theatre’s Connections Festival at Salisbury Playhouse.

The theatre is transforming its coffee lounge into a Connections Festival hub where young people can relax with their friends and watch interactive performances by members of Stage ‘65 Youth Theatre.

There will also be three free workshops in the community space where theatre professionals will share their expertise.

On Monday (April 20) actors and directors will give tips and advice in the How to Make It in Theatre workshop which will include a question and answer session.

Award-winning puppetry experts The River People will lead a workshop about the art of puppeteering on Tuesday (April 21) and on Wednesday (April 22) there will be workshop by Disguarded Nut Theatre Company.

Salisbury Playhouse has received extra funding from the National Theatre to stage this event and enable young people to participate in the workshops free of charge.

The activities are aimed at those aged 12 to 18.

The NT Connections Festival will also see nine schools and youth theatre groups from the south west perform a series of plays that have been specially written for young people by some of the country’s leading playwrights.

Among them is a performance of Remote by Stef Smith by the BTEC Acting students who study at Salisbury Playhouse and Wiltshire College in Salisbury.

This is the third year Salisbury Playhouse has hosted the National Theatre’s Connections festival which gives thousands of young people across the country the chance to perform dynamic and challenging plays about issues concerning young people.

The Connections Festival Hub will be open from 5pm to 7pm from Monday to Wednesday. The workshops run between 5.30pm and 6.30pm each day and the National Theatre Connections performances start at 7pm.

Tickets to the workshops are free but must be reserved in advance from the Salisbury Playhouse ticket office on 01722 320333.
