A NEW dance company for people aged 60 and over is being launched at Salisbury Playhouse.

The theatre say DANCE SIX-O will give participants the chance to express themselves through dance and movement, learn routines and have fun. The sessions will include a range of contemporary dance styles.

To launch DANCE SIX-O there will be three free taster workshops taking place at Salisbury Playhouse on June 3rd, 10th and 17th from 10.15-11.45am. The sessions will be led by professional dance teachers who have experience of working with older dancers.

It is hoped in the future, group members will have the chance to give public performances, in addition to enjoying the many health and social benefits regular dance sessions can bring, and making new friends.

The group will be open to everyone and the organisers hope men and women, people with limited mobility and in wheelchairs, and those who have never danced before will all want to join.

Meg Edgar, Judith Bassano and Philippa Heseltine were inspired to launch DANCE SIX-O, after attending a festival of dance for elders at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, which established a Company of Elders 29 years ago.

“We felt this was definitely something we needed in Salisbury because dance brings many physical, social and emotional benefits which are so important for overall wellbeing” said Meg. “There are many isolated people in the community and this is a chance for them to meet new people, work together and have a great time. Dance can be enjoyed and experienced whatever your age and there really is no upper age limit for this group.”

Judith, who is celebrating her 80th birthday this year, added: “I love to dance and certainly don’t want to ever feel that I’m too old to do it. Or, if you used to dance, maybe now is the time to take it up again. Whatever your ability you will be most welcome.”

The dance and movement sessions will be adapted to the dancers’ needs to ensure everyone works at a comfortable level. Jill Harding, communications officer at the playhouse, said: "DANCE SIX-O is part of Salisbury Playhouse’s commitment to work with people of all ages in the community, giving them opportunities to perform and learn new skills."

Although the first three workshops are free, dancers will need to reserve a place at one of the sessions by contacting the Salisbury Playhouse box office on 01722 320333.
