WINTERBOURNE Opera is to make its debut at The Chapel Nightclub in Salisbury.

The nightspot’s Victorian gothic chapel will host Faust, Gounod’s haunting opera of guilt, redemption and destroyed innocence.

"We are delighted to be staging our opera in The Chapel Nightclub, it offers such exciting possibilities for our Director, Ben Occhipinti and our professional creative team,” said the chairman of Winterbourne Opera Hilary Sharland.

“We have a fantastic cast of young professional soloists — we were overwhelmed by the number of talented singers who auditioned for us in London in November.”

She added: “The Chapel night club is an incredibly exciting venue and Faust is probably one of the most dramatic operas that we have produced. Ben will be staging it with a contemporary twist, so we can gurantee that the whole experience will be a totally unique one.”

The group welcomes back Salisbury’s Jessica Broad, who has been was touring with the Welsh National Opera, and Emma Watkinson, who has been starring with English Touring Opera.

The production will take the audience on an emotional journey as the demonic Mephistopheles manipulates the earthly heroes to bring about their destruction.

Musical Director Calum Fraser will bring a first-class young professional orchestra, and there are opportunities for sixth formers and undergraduates to make up the soldiers’ and girls’ choruses and sing alongside Winterbourne Opera’s

own chorus.

Performances are on July 28, 29, 31 and August 1, at 7.30pm. For tickets call Salisbury Playhouse on 01722 320 333 or go to salisburyplayhouse.com.
