THE Ancient Technology Centre (ATC) in Cranborne invite the public for an open day dedicated to experimental archaeology on Sunday.

As well as staff and volunteers from the centre, there will be visiting experts from the University of Exeter, the Ancient Wessex Network and Wulfhodenas Anglo-Saxon Living History Society.

There will be talks, displays and have-a-go-sessions on lithics (stone tool making), metallurgy (smelting ores and (production of metal ware), pottery, textiles, cookery, cordwaining and carpentry.

ATC manager Luke Winter said: “The aim is to enlighten the visiting public as to the reasons behind the work of experimental archaeologists.

“In general, Many people see experimental archaeology as 're-enactment' – playing or 'making things up'. This is a great chance to demonstrate fascinating activities and processes and to explain the thinking and methodology that lies behind the 'playing'.

Tickets are £6 per adult and £3 school age children, accompanied pre-schoolers free. Visit ancienttechnologycentre.co.uk
