IF YOU are looking for something to warm your heart and keep little ones entertained then Breaking the ice is just the thing, writes Kate Reeves.
Aimed at 2-5 year olds, this highly visual with no language production tells the touching true story of the unusual friendship between a husky and polar bear.
The mesmerising soundtrack is by Torgeir Vassvik and the scene is completed with wintery projections of ice holes complete with swimming fish, snow prints and the swirling Northern lights.
Katy Costigan plays the nature photographer with a comic touch that has the children in giggles.
Victoria Dyson captures the husky from facial expression to each excited movement.
The essence of a polar bear is felt immediately that Sarah Shephard arrives on stage her movement is imposing yet endearing.
The interactive nature of the performance draws the children into the wintery wonderland, as the story nears the end children are offered husky or polar bear ears and to play on the ‘ice’.
My 2.5 year old Elsa was captivated from the start and 50 mins is an ideal length for this age group. A perfect preschool Christmas treat for adults as well as children.
Breaking the Ice runs in the Salberg at Salisbury Playhouse until Saturday, December 5. For tickets call the box office on 01722 320 333 or go to salisburyplayhouse.com
