A NEWLY-FORMED orchestral group is to perform its first concert in Salisbury.

The Westminster Chamber Orchestra will be at St Thomas’ Church on Saturday (January 9) at 7.30pm.

The group is led by professional violinist Marian Givens, originally from Salisbury, who is returning to the city to put on the concert.

She said: “The Westminster Chamber Orchestra is a young and exciting professional group which has been formed not only to give classical concerts in their own right but also, in association with the National Preparatory School Orchestras, to offer young people the opportunity to perform alongside professional players in ‘side-by-side’ educational concerts.

“As leader of the group, I am proud to be giving our first concert in Salisbury. This is my home-town where I benefitted not only from a wonderful musical education but numerous performing opportunities.”

Marian still maintains her links with Salisbury also working as a violin teacher at Salisbury Cathedral School alongside her freelance career.

The concert programme includes the Grieg Holberg Suite, Bartok Rumanian Dances and Tchaikovsky Elegy and works by Mozart and Suk. Tickets: £15 and £10 concessions. They are available in advance by eEmailing Maz994@aol.com or purchase on the door.
