THROUGHOUT the Chalke Valley History Festival there will be holding a variety of free, informal and interactive, half-hour Pop-Up talks - informal, interactive and free half-hour talks.

The talks take place throughout the site with most being held in one of the tents and others at obvious talking points, such as the like the RNLI historic lifeboat, Second World War tanks, in the Anglo-Saxon settlement or at the Viking long ship.

Speakers are given a time, advertised on large blackboards and fliers through the site, a hand-held microphone and, at their allotted time, they begin speaking.

During the week, most of the pop-ups will be by living historians, but at the weekend, historians and speakers will be there to talk about subjects from a shipwreck off the Dorset coast, and steam trains, to fabrics of the First World War, and the efficacy of the Cromwell tank.

The festival runs from June 27 to July 3. It is the largest festival dedicated entirely to history in the UK.

The full literary programme of over 140 speakers can be found online at cvhf.org.uk.
