A NEW dance show will be leaping, splattering, swirling and boogying onto the city stage.

The Magic Paintbrush is at Salisbury Arts Centre on Tuesday, 11am and 2pm.

It tells the story a brave, young heroine who is given a magic paintbrush that can bring paintings to life.

The family dance show is performed by Springs Dance Company with choreography from Darren Ellis of Darren Ellis Dance.

With a beatboxing-inspired soundtrack and video design accompanying four dancers, The Magic Paintbrush has been created for everyone aged 3 and above.

Once upon a time in a grey, colourless world, someone is scribbling. As the young girl paints, her drawings appear on the surfaces of the theatre where they wiggle to life before magically floating out in 3D form.

The Magic Paintbrush has been inspired by ancient and modern versions of a Chinese folktale.

Director Nathan Stickley said: “The Magic Paintbrush is a modern retelling of an old folk tale — a girl who is given a magic paintbrush brings joy and hope to a bleak world. We’ve created an imaginative production that keeps on inspiring both children and adults long after coming to see the show. Our audiences haven’t stopped talking about the shows’ magic and surprises.”

The magic of the New York Met Opera also comes to the art centre on Saturday with a live screening of Mozart’s Don Giovanni at 5.55pm.

Other offerings at the venue include music from The Furrow Collective (today), a Live Lunch on Saturday with Jemima Farey, and Hijack Open Mic (October 27).

From Tuesday to Thursday 27, youngsters can find out about creating a short animated film in Animated Experience with Matthew Dean. The course is for those 10 and older.

There will be free lantern making sessions in the arts centre cafe on Wednesday from 10am- 3pm. It is sponsored by Salisbury BID.

And on Friday 28 there will be a screening of James and the Giant Peach, 11am, and as part of the Big Draw a free 2D stop motion animation workshop is being held from 10am-3pm to celebrate Roald Dahl’s.

Also meet some exotic creatures as part of Up Close and Personal, 11am and 2pm.
