FOLK-ROCK singer Martha Wainwright says she is “excited” to be bringing her tour to Salisbury.

She will be at City Hall on Wednesday, February 1, 8pm, as part of the 15-date tour across the country.

“I’m excited, I don’t think I’ve played there so it’s a new discovery. I’m sure it is going to be very beautiful. It is a magical part of the UK. We’re hitting all parts of the UK so it’s nice to include Salisbury in that.”

She began building a buzz with her well-noted EPs, prior to her 2005 critically and commercially-successful debut LP, Martha Wainwright.

She has also appeared in Martin Scorsese’s film Aviator and the HBO special Olive Kitteridge with Frances McDormand.

Martha will be joined on stage by four musicians.

She says: “We’re mostly focusing on this latest record, Goodnight City, but it also has lots of songs from my records from the past and the greatest hits and it has energy. Some of the songs are solo and some of them are just piano – it’s a mix of styles.”

Music has always been a part of Martha’s life. She was born in New York City to folk legends Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III and is the sister of Rufus Wainwright.

“It runs in my family, all my family are musicians so I’m not sure if I wanted it as much as I was sort of surrounded by it and it became the most natural thing for me to do.”

Speaking about what she enjoys most about performing, she says: “The contact with the audience, I’m a pretty open performer so the idea that anything can happen at any time is exciting to me. I like to travel too.”

Summing up the show in a word she said it’s “personal”. She adds: “This record [Goodnight City] is a bit different, there’s more covers and songs written by other people so it has a slightly different feeling to it. It’s probably a bit more upbeat and uplifting and a bit more fun.”
