DAN Cruickshank will tell the history of architecture through the stories of 100 iconic buildings.

Journeying through time and place, from the ancient Egyptian pyramids to the soaring skyscrapers of Manhattan, renowned architectural historian Cruickshank explores the most inspirational and characterful creations in world architecture.

His selection includes many of the world’s best known buildings that represent key or pioneering moments in architectural history, such as the Pantheon in Rome, Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, the Taj Mahal in Agra and the Forbidden City in Beijing.

But he also covers less obvious and more surprising structures – buildings like Oriel Chambers in Liverpool and the Narkomfin Apartment Building in Moscow.

Cruickshank has visited all but three of these buildings, some in inaccessible and threatened locations, such as Hatra in Iraq and Palmyra in Syria.

He is a writer and architectural historian who has made numerous programmes for the BBC. He is the author of several bestselling books, including Around the World in Eighty Treasures.

His talk A History of Architecture in 100 Buildings is followed by a question and answer session and book signing.

He will be speaking at Salisbury Arts Centre, 7.30pm, Thursday, February 9.

Tickets are £13 and £11 for concessions, available from the box office on 01722 321744 or online at salisburyartscentre.co.uk.
